Via Ferrata Climbing

Climb through spectacular landscapes with views of sea and World Heritage. Ravnfloget Via Ferrata offers safe, guided mountain climbing for both beginners and experienced climbers – a thrilling adventure you won’t forget.

Guided climbing in a dramatic World Heritage setting

Join us for a climbing experience you’ll remember! Ravnfloget Via Ferrata offers a scenic and well-secured climbing route with panoramic views over Vega, the sea, and the UNESCO-listed archipelago. Since its opening in 2019, more than 5,000 climbers have challenged themselves on the route. Now it’s your turn.

Safe climbing with views worth the effort

The route is equipped with fixed safety features such as steel cables, steps and suspension bridges. You’ll climb with a guide the entire way – no prior experience needed, just a normal fitness level and sturdy hiking shoes. Our guides provide gear, instruction, and ensure safety – even if you’re a bit outside your comfort zone.

Even in rain, the route is safe to use thanks to secure handholds and footholds designed for all weather conditions.

Two routes – one summit

At the top of Ravnfloget, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views over the Vega World Heritage area. On clear days, you can see far across the archipelago, the ocean, and the horizon. A cosy shelter at the top offers a great spot to rest, enjoy your lunch and meet fellow adventurers who hiked up the Vegatrappa trail.

Green route – varied, accessible and scenic

The green route is suitable for most people in normal physical condition. It is 510 meters long with an elevation gain of 225 meters, offering a varied mix of steep and gentler sections. Along the way, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of islands, seascapes and open countryside – with the mountain Søla as a constant highlight. After 30–40 minutes of climbing, the green and red routes merge. Here, you’ll find a rest area where you can catch your breath and take in the views before tackling the final stretch. The trail eases briefly before ending with a few new challenges – including a "Nepal bridge" at the very top. If you prefer not to cross it, you can safely exit the route here and walk the last few metres to the summit.

Red route – for experienced climbers

To book the red route, you must have completed the green route at least once before. This route is for climbers with solid experience and good physical condition. It is 550 meters long and shares the same 225-meter elevation gain, but with a significantly higher level of difficulty. The first 150 meters rise almost vertically up the rock face and require comfort with heights and exposed sections. After that, the trail softens and joins the green route before reaching the rest area. The red route finishes along the same path as the green, including the Nepal bridge – a manageable challenge once you’ve come that far. Despite the steepness, the route is well-secured with solid footholds and handholds, so you can feel safe throughout.

Via Ferrata is an Italian term meaning "iron road." In English, it's often called an iron road, and in German, Klettersteig. In Norwegian, it's usually translated as "climbing path" or "iron trail," but it's most commonly referred to as a climbing route with a wire. It is a prepared route in mountainous terrain where climbers use fixed installations such as cables, ladders, and iron rungs to climb safely, typically with a harness and safety gear.

The climbing tour begins on the northwest side of Vega, at Ravnfloget. You can get there by driving or biking from Gladstad toward Sundsvoll, and parking at the base of Ravnfloget. From there, follow the trail that leads up to the Vegatrappa. After about 10 minutes of walking, you'll reach a newly built service and emergency shelter. This is the meeting point for the Via Ferrata tour. Here, you'll meet your climbing guide, who will provide the necessary equipment and give instructions and information before the tour begins.

The minimum height to participate in the climbing tour is 140 cm. This requirement ensures that participants can reach the fixed installations and use the safety equipment correctly.

There is no set age limit for participation, but a minimum height of 140 cm is required. This ensures that participants can use the safety equipment properly and reach the fixed installations during the climb.

It’s completely normal to feel a few butterflies in your stomach! Many participants experience some excitement or nervousness before the climb. The guide is used to this and will closely support anyone who finds the height a bit intimidating. You'll receive plenty of encouragement and guidance throughout the experience—so you can look forward to a safe and empowering adventure.

There are two route options in Via Ferrata Ravnfloget – green and red – with different levels of difficulty:

Green Route

The green route is 510 meters long with an elevation gain of 225 meters. It starts steep but offers varied and exciting climbing with stunning views of the cultural landscape, sea, and islands – with Søla as an impressive focal point. After 30–40 minutes of climbing, the green route meets the red one, and shortly after the junction, there's a rest area. From there, the route becomes a bit gentler before ending with new challenges. Near the top, you cross a "Nepal bridge." If you prefer to avoid it, you can detach from the route and walk the last few meters to the summit.

Red Route

The red route is 550 meters long with the same elevation gain – 225 meters – but is significantly more demanding than the green. It is only suitable for individuals with solid climbing experience. The route climbs nearly vertically for the first 150 meters, then levels out somewhat and joins the green route. From there, it follows the same path as the green, including the rest stop and the Nepal bridge near the top. Although the red route is steep and exposed, it is well secured with solid footholds and handholds, providing good safety throughout.

No, climbing experience is not required. Before the tour begins, all participants receive thorough instruction from experienced guides. You'll be introduced to the equipment, safety procedures, and how to move along the route – so you can feel safe and confident throughout the entire experience.

The full Via Ferrata experience takes approximately 3.5 hours. This includes check-in, equipment distribution, safety briefing, the climb itself, and breaks along the way.

You don't need to be an athlete – average physical fitness is sufficient. As long as you're comfortable walking in uneven terrain and have normal strength and endurance, you'll be able to complete the tour.

No, all climbing must take place with a guide and within organized groups. This is important for safety and ensures that everyone receives the necessary instruction, support, and supervision throughout the experience.

The descent is via the Vegatrappa – a prepared wooden staircase about 400 meters long. The stairs safely lead you from the top of Ravnfloget back down to the trail you followed to the Via Ferrata starting point.

The descent from the top via the Vegatrappa back to the parking lot takes about 30 minutes. The route is well-prepared and follows the same trail you used on the way up to the Via Ferrata starting point.

Currently, there is no guest dock at Sundsvoll. If you arrive by boat, you can use the guest dock at Gardsøya. It is possible to arrange transport from there with the guide in advance of the climbing tour.

The trail to the starting point of the Via Ferrata takes about 25 minutes at a relaxed walking pace. It follows a clear and well-prepared path from the parking area up to the meeting point by the service and emergency shelter.

The trail climbs about 100 vertical meters and passes through exciting and varied terrain. It is well-prepared with boardwalks, bridges, and steps, allowing you to walk the entire way without getting your feet wet. Along the route, there are also rest areas where you can pause and enjoy the surroundings.

It is recommended to wear sturdy hiking shoes with a stiff sole. This provides better stability, good grip, and support during both the trail hike and the climb along the route.

Wear comfortable hiking clothes suited to the weather that allow for good freedom of movement. It's also recommended to use simple gloves for better grip and protection during the climb – you can bring your own or purchase them on-site.

Bring a small backpack with food and water, as well as extra clothing suited to the weather and temperature. A windproof jacket is a good idea, especially for breaks or at the summit. All necessary climbing gear will be provided by the guide before the tour begins.

Yes, you are allowed to use your own climbing gear as long as it is approved. You must bring a harness, helmet, and a certified Via Ferrata lanyard. The lanyard must be equipped with a shock absorber and carabiners marked with a (K), indicating they are approved for Via Ferrata use. All personal equipment must be checked and approved by the guide before the tour begins.

The Via Ferrata is typically open from April to early October. It usually operates throughout the Easter holiday and then on weekends until the high season begins in mid-June. During the high season – from mid-June to the end of August – climbing tours are held daily.

No, all participants must book in advance through our website. This ensures proper planning, appropriate group sizes, and that guides and equipment are ready for each tour.

Yes, it is possible to arrange private tours outside the regular schedule. Groups of at least 4 people can request a specific date and time. Contact us by email at post@ravnfloget.no or call +47 468 32 540 to make arrangements.

Yes, groups of at least 10 participants with a shared billing address are eligible for a group discount. Every 10th participant climbs for free, meaning the total price for 10 people is NOK 8,550. Group discounts cannot be booked through the website – please contact post@ravnfloget.no for inquiries and reservations.

Yes, climbing usually goes ahead even in rain and wind. The activity is designed to handle varying weather conditions. However, tours are canceled in case of thunderstorms or if there is ice on footholds, handholds, or cables – as climbing would not be safe under those conditions.

Climbing Via Ferrata is considered very safe as long as the established safety guidelines are followed. All participants use certified harnesses and carabiners that remain continuously attached to the cable. In the event of a fall, the gear will catch you at the nearest anchor point, significantly reducing the risk of injury. We recommend that all participants carefully read the safety rules before the tour.
